Community and private writing solve different problems
A community app can help on a hard afternoon when you want to see that other people are also taking the day seriously. Daily pledges and a feed are social tools. They are not a substitute for a home group, and they are not a private record you can search six months later when you are working a step.
A 12-step companion is for the written part of the programme: prompts for each step, a journal, nightly inventory, gratitude, lists, reminders and a meeting finder. 12steps does not run a public recovery feed. If you want strangers cheering a streak, this is the wrong product. If you want to write plainly and keep control of who sees it, that is the job it is built for.
Ask who can read what you type
Before you put a Fourth Step, an amends list or someone else’s name into an app, read how the product stores that text. A community feature that publishes by default is a poor home for material that should stay between you and a sponsor. Even a “friends only” setting is still a social graph.
In 12steps, personal content is encrypted on the device before it syncs. Standard mode allows an email password reset. Private mode keeps the key on your device, so we cannot read the work or reset the password. Sharing with a sponsor is optional and uses a link you choose to send. There is no public timeline of your recovery writing.
You can keep both if both jobs are real
Some people use I Am Sober, or another community app, for the daily check-in with peers, and keep step writing somewhere quieter. That split is allowed. What usually goes wrong is dumping Fourth Step work into a feed because it was the app that was already open.
12steps currently finds physical AA meetings across Great Britain and Ireland, NA meetings across the UK and CA meetings worldwide. London online AA meetings are included too. It supports ten fellowships and adapts labels to the one you pick. It does not import I Am Sober history. If you try it, start with one journal entry or one inventory, not a promise to move your whole recovery onto a new screen.
