Choosing a recovery app

Nomo, a sobriety clock, and a 12-step companion

A sobriety clock answers one question well: how long has it been? Nomo is built around that job. Some people later want the same private place to hold step writing, a nightly inventory, gratitude, and a way to look up a meeting. Those are different jobs. The useful comparison is which job you need today, not which app has the longer feature list.

Start with the job you are hiring the app for

If you mainly want a clean-time counter on your phone, a dedicated clock is a reasonable choice. Nomo is known for that: one or more clocks, a simple record of days, and little else demanding attention. There is nothing wrong with keeping the tool small when that is what you will actually open.

A 12-step companion is for people who already work a programme and want the writing, lists and reminders in one place. 12steps includes a clean-time counter, but it also holds guided step work, a journal, morning and nightly inventories, gratitude, personal lists, reminders and a meeting finder. Use that wider set only if you will write in it. An unused worksheet is clutter.

Keep the comparison honest

Nomo is a separate product. 12steps is not a reskin of it, does not import Nomo clocks, and does not try to replace every clock-only habit. If a simple counter is working, there is no need to move. If you are looking for step prompts, inventories or fellowship-specific language, a clock will not grow into that on its own.

12steps currently finds physical AA meetings across Great Britain and Ireland, NA meetings across the UK and CA meetings worldwide. London online AA meetings are included too. The counter and writing tools are available on any account. Meeting search is a public tool as well, so you can try that part without signing in.

Check privacy before you move your writing

A clock may store little more than a date. A journal and inventory hold names, fears and details you may not want on a shared screen. Check device lock, account recovery, and whether stored content is encrypted. Encryption does not hide text that is visible on the display or copied into another app.

In 12steps, personal content is encrypted on the device before it syncs. Standard mode allows an email password reset. Private mode keeps the key on your device, so we cannot read the work or reset the password. Save the recovery phrase if you choose Private mode. That trade-off is part of the product, not a slogan.

Try the writing tools before you abandon a clock that works

Open the read-only demo, write one inventory or journal line in a free account, and see whether you come back the next day. If you do not, keep the clock. If you do, you can still keep Nomo for the counter and use 12steps for the programme work. Nothing requires a single app to do every job.

12steps is free to use. It is independent of Nomo and of every fellowship. It is a recovery tool, not treatment, and not a reason to skip a meeting or a conversation with a sponsor.
